MORE THAN BOOKS AND BUILDINGS
Dementia support
People living with dementia, and their care partners, can easily feel socially isolated. It becomes increasingly difficult to engage in everyday activities, and the stigma that makes people feel unwelcome or embarrassed when dementia symptoms occur in public places is isolating.
The library has partnered with OHSU, PSU and an array of agencies to create caregiver kits for families who are caring for a loved one with dementia. The kits, along with “memory café” events at local libraries, will educate family caregivers and offer them concrete tools to stimulate positive memories and conversations. These kits can be checked out by any family with a library card. Memory Cafes are positive experiences that provide connection and a break from the loss that caregivers and those with dementia can feel.
