Organizational Accomplishments over the last 5 years

Every day, more than 24,000 children are touched by literacy program that would not exist without The Library Foundation. In summer that number goes up to 50,000. The vast reach and impact of the library's literacy work illustrates what private funding, and a small nonprofit, can do in partnership with a strong public library. Over the last five years, we have:

  • Supported the proven Raising A Reader program that we launched with the library in 2004, reaching  more than 36,000 children and parents last year.
  • Expanded a proven in-classroom program (Books 2 U) for struggling readers in Multnomah County's lowest performing 3rd-6th grade classrooms, reaching over 25,000 children last year.
  • Expanded our Summer Reading program, now one of the busiest in the nation, reaching more than 98,000 children last summer.
  • Secured successful passage of Measure 26-114 with 72% of voters. The foundation was the largest single contributor to this campaign.

Programs funded by our foundation played a vital role in Multnomah County Library winning the 2009 Medal for Museum and Library Service, the most prestigious library award in the nation.
