As Oregon schools empty for summer break, we adults might envy kids all that free time lounging around with a good book, even if some kids are not thrilled at the prospect.

With that in mind -- and because we parents get tired of nagging -- we asked five top elementary school readers to offer other kids summer reads.

Studies show that children who don't read during the break can lose one to three months of reading skills, says Katie Anderson, youth services consultant for the Oregon State Library. Reading between four and 10 books is thought to keep comprehension and vocabulary skills in top shape. The same advice applies to middle and high schoolers.

Where to start?

Consider the recommendations from our student readers.

Or take a look at the recommendations Anderson culled from the list of 150 Oregon books compiled for the sesquicentennial.

If that's not enough to give even the most reluctant reader something to choose from, we asked the summer reading program coordinator at the Multnomah County Library, which has had a summer reading program since 1912, to offer one more title, for good measure.
