Multnomah County Library is one of the most important cultural and educational resources in the region. Used by 13,000 people each day, it reaches more citizens of Multnomah County than any other public or private cultural or educational service. Our library helps assure our community's economic health, cultural vitality, and livability. It is a critical piece of the cultural landscape that draws people to the Portland area. All that creates a vibrant community–creativity, diversity, knowledge, ready access to information–is embodied in our Library.

Today, Multnomah County Library is the highest circulating library its size in the nation. It has over two million books and materials in its collections and a vast array of programs, offering our community so many opportunities to read and learn.

Beyond library walls

Library outreach goes far beyond the walls of the library–to schools, childcare centers, after-school programs, homeless shelters and those who are homebound.

Literacy, a basic need

Without literacy, a child is likely to face lifelong challenges. Our library is dedicated to children's literacy. What started as an innovative approach–pairing full-time early childhood development specialists with librarians–has gained local respect and national awards, and has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of children.

The electronic age

The library provides access to more than 500 computers and free computer classes. A user-friendly database provides online access to the library's extensive collections. The library's website offers a host of services, from e-books and live homework help to guides for everything from jobs to eateries.

A wide-ranging, movable collection

Cardholders can check out books online and have them sent to their local branch, or even request home delivery for a nominal fee. The library provides books in multiple languages, and its special collections include rare books and a renowned children's collection.
